The first Ferrari 246 was the racing car Ferrari 246 F1 built for the World Championship Formula 1 in 1958. According to the rules of the competition prevailing in the 1954 – 1960s, the volume of aspirated engines was limited to 2.5 liters between the cylinders. It was the first use of the V6 engine in the Formula 1 cars. As for the rest, 246 F1 246 was a usual car. On 246 F1 there was a 2.417- liter engine Dino V6 with an angle 65 of the front drive design. Dimensions of the car were 4030/1500/980 mm under the wheelbase 2160 mm and the curb weight was 560 kg.

The performance was successful: the first place was taken by the pilot Mike Hawthorne racing the French Grand Prix in Reims and the second one - in the competition of designers. In 1960, the car came the first in the Grand Prix of Italy in Monza. In the same year appeared Ferrari 246SP, the first car of this model with the middle engine layout. The engine was the same, the transmission was 4-speed manual one. The predecessor of Ferrari 246 F1 was Ferrari 801 F1, and the successor in 1960 was Ferrari 156 F1.
Sports cars Ferrari 246 Dino were produced from 1969 to 1974. The predecessor was Ferrari Dino 206 GT. Structurally, they were rear wheel drive cars with the engine located in the middle. The brand Dino (so called the son of Enzo Ferrari) defined models with less than 12 the number of cylinders in the engine, and suggested greater availability of these Ferrari cars due to their lower cost. Given the fact that there were not other differences in the design of 246 GT and 246 GST, it can be assumed that the increase in 20 kg to curb weight GST (1100 kg) fell on a removable roof. The performance of 246 versions correspond with all Ferrari characteristics: very frisky Italian “horses”, perfect handleability and characteristic sounds of Ferrari engines.
From 1969 to 1974, 3761 Ferrari 246 GT (2487 units) and 246 of the GST (1274 units) cars were produced. Simultaneously a similar car like Fiat Dino was produced. The successor was Ferrari 308.
