Ferrari 246 Reviews
The first Ferrari 246 was the racing car Ferrari 246 F1 built for the World Championship Formula 1 in 1958. According to the rules of the competition prevailing in the 1954 – 1960s, the volume of aspirated engines was limited to 2.5 liters between the cylinders. It was the first use of the V6 engine in the Formula 1 cars. As for the rest, 246 F1 246 was a usual car. On 246 F1 there was a 2.417- liter engine Dino V6 with an angle 65 of the front drive design. Dimensions of the car were 4030/1500/980 mm under the wheelbase 2160 mm and the curb weight was 560 kg.
The performance was successful: the first place was taken by the pilot Mike Hawthorne racing the French Grand Prix in Reims and the second one - in the competition of designers. In 1960, the car came the first in the Grand Prix of Italy in Monza. In the same year appeared Ferrari 246SP, the first car of this model with the middle engine layout. The engine was the same, the transmission was 4-speed manual one. The predecessor of Ferrari 246 F1 was Ferrari 801 F1, and the successor in 1960 was Ferrari 156 F1.
Sports cars Ferrari 246 Dino were produced from 1969 to 1974. The predecessor was Ferrari Dino 206 GT. Structurally, they were rear wheel drive cars with the engine located in the middle. The brand Dino (so called the son of Enzo Ferrari) defined models with less than 12 the number of cylinders in the engine, and suggested greater availability of these Ferrari cars due to their lower cost. The rival of Ferrari 246 was Porshe 911.
The index “246” stood for “24” – the engine capacity of 2.4 liters, “6” - the number of cylinders. Ferrari 246 Dino was the first relatively affordable model of this manufacturer, many drivers was able to appreciate its high driving performance and outstanding design. In 2004, 246 was named the sixth in the list of the best sports cars of the 1970s.
According to the opinion of many people, the design of 246 from Scaglietti is considered to be the most beautiful of all the models of Ferrari, which is facilitated by the ideal proportions and the perfect smooth lines, which only can be received from a car. It should be noted that the car had no logos and nameplates Ferrari.
The model was produced with bodies Berlinetta (coupe) GT and Targa (spyder) GST (after 1971), made of ferro - alloy. They settled on a strong ladder frame of tubular steel.
2.418-liter carbureted V6 DOHC engines with a cast iron block of cylinders was set up at the Fiat factory. The European version developed 195 hp at 7600 r / min, the drive torque was 226.5 Nm/5500 r. The version for the U.S. market was less powerful - 175 hp. The maximum speed of the model reached 235 km / h and the acceleration - to 60 miles / h (or 96.56 km / h) was 7.1 seconds. Ferrari 246 Dino Drive fell to the rear wheels.
The version of Ferrari 246 GST was introduced at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1972. Already known 195-horsepower V6 engine was unitized with a 5-speed manual transmission. The most noticeable feature was the removable roof element - targa.
Given the fact that there were not other differences in the design of 246 GT and 246 GST, it can be assumed that the increase in 20 kg to curb weight GST (1100 kg) fell on a removable roof. The performance of 246 versions correspond with all Ferrari characteristics: very frisky Italian “horses”, perfect handleability and characteristic sounds of Ferrari engines.
From 1969 to 1974, 3761 Ferrari 246 GT (2487 units) and 246 of the GST (1274 units) cars were produced. Simultaneously a similar car like Fiat Dino was produced. The successor was Ferrari 308. Despite the fact that the release of Ferrari 246 Dino was completed long ago, the car is still the object of worship of many fans of this model. The well-preserved cars are very expensive at collectors and are a good way to invest money.
